The only things which can prevent this from happening are the permanent overwriting of the files by new data, and actual physical damage to the USB drive. If you think the operating system may be at fault, it will be a good idea to save your crucially important files to another external back up system, different from the USB drive and the main hard drive. Even burning to a CD will do this. Once you have completed your USB data recovery by saving the file externally, you will then need to diagnose the fault to ensure it doesn't happen again.
