How To Save Your Data With A Hard Drive Crash Recovery Operation
A hard drive crash recovery can be quite difficult to effect, depending on whether the cause of the failure is hardware or software. It is no longer just a case of using a software program to locate a file which the operating system cannot find any more, although even that can come into play at some later stage. The first question you need to ask yourself is how much time and money you sre prepared to spend on recovering this data. The process is unlikely to be quick, and there are certain things you will need.
If your computer has given up the ghost, and you are now seeing blue screens instead of a proper boot up, then it is possible that the problem can be corrected. The problem is, of course, how much time and money are you prepared to spend when the results are far from guaranteed, and you can always just pick up another second hand base unit. You can always post details of the blue screen error you are getting on an online forum, to see if you can get any advice.
If this possibility has been exhausted, as it will be in the vast majority of cases, there is only one thing you can do to attempt to save your data. Take the hard drive from the computer which has just died, and wire it into another computer as a slave drive. This way, the corrupted operating system will no longer be needed, as the computer will be run from the operating system installed on the new computer's main hard drive. The old hard drive may still function as a data storage unit, and the data you thought you had lost may well still be there.
As there is no guarantee how long the drive will remain operational, now is a good time to make some back up copies. Burn CD or DVD copies, transfer the files to a flash drive, or even just copy them to the main drive on the new computer as soon as you can. Attempting a hard drive failure data recovery when there has been a complete mechanical breakdown of the drive itself is not going to be so easy. In the vast majority of cases, you will need the help of a professional with the right equipment if you are to recover your files.
There are some crude ways of trying to get the drive to function just one more time, and occasionally these methods will work. One technique which has worked on some drives is freezing. If this works for you, get the most important files copied to a flash drive as soon as you can, as you will only have limited time. In most cases, you will still need to take the drive to a professional for them to attempt to extract and save your data. These professionals have the technology to effect a full hard drive crash recovery.
