Recover Data From Hard Drive Using Free Or Paid Software

When you need to recover data from hard drive, you have several options. You can download free software and attempt to do the job yourself, you can buy some paid software with advanced features which can help you further, or you can hand the job over to a professional. Which one of these is the right option depends on what caused the data loss in the first place, how valuable the data is, and how much time and money you are prepared to spend. All of this assumes that there is still a possibility for the data to be recovered.

There is one step you simply must not take if you are to save your data. That is to write anything else to the hard drive after the data is lost. Once the operating system considers that a file has been deleted, it is no longer concerned with it. Although the data still exists on the hard drive, the space it is taking up is regarded as free space by the operating system. If anything else needs writing to the disk, it could well be this data which is overwritten.

If you want to try some free software, it must be downloaded to another computer. Then, put a flash drive into one of the USB sockets on that second computer. Transfer the program files across to the flash drive. Unplug the flash drive, and plug it into the USB socket on the original computer. You can run the software without needing to write any more files to the hard drive. If the data was lost due to the Recycle Bin being emptied, the software will find it.

If you are trying to recover hard drive data due to a problem with the operating system, matters are less clear. There is still a chance the software will pick it up, but it is not guaranteed. There are professional software packages with more options which will give you a better chance to recover data from hard drive. If the operating system has completely failed to function, there is nothing you can do with software. What you need to do is transfer the hard drive from this computer into another one, and set it up as a slave drive.

If the problem is not with software but a mechanical fault, it is unlikely you will recover hard drive data without calling in a professional. There are some tricks you can try before you take this step, and they have been known to work. The easiest to try is that of freezing the hard drive. Take it out of the computer, put it into a bag and freeze it overnight. Take it out, put it back in to the computer and just see if it makes a difference. If it does, act quickly to transfer data to flash as you only have a short time to recover data from hard drive.
