My hard drive just decided to fail. the thing still works, but windows doesn’t even recognize it anymore. A friend of mine worked on it for all of five seconds and discovered that the file system read RAW instead of the original NTFS I formatted it with. I’ve search the internet for data recovery software, however, the price tag doesn’t make things any easier. I don’t want to be cheap or anything, I’ll pay the money…but I’m wondering is there a freeware or open source program out there that will do everything that the retail data recovery program can do?
For example: there’s a program called GetDataBack that will restore my files…but is there a free program that will do all GetDataBack (or equivalent) can do?
I’m just curious..
Thanks
If at all possible I would like to recover with the directory structure intact…

Hard drive logical failure and data loss is a very common situation. It might occur due to numerous reasons that include file system corruption, virus infection, hard drive formatting, operating system malfunction, accidental deletion and other similar reasons. There exists data recovery software, which are able to help you get your missing, lost or inaccessible data from logically damaged storage media. It doesn’t matter whether the storage media is hard drive, CD, DVD, USB drive and many others.

Most of the computer operating systems have in-built tool to handle minor issues with your hard drive, file system and operating system. For example, in Microsoft Windows- ChkDsk, Mac OS X- Disk Utility, Linux and UNIX- fsck and Novell NetWare- VRepair. These utility check the integrity and consistency of your file system and hard drive. If they detect any error, they will try to fix it.

The effectiveness and success rate of these utilities depends upon the cause and extent of damage. But these utilities can not handle severe corruption situations like file system corruption, hard drive formatting and operating system corruption. In all such cases, third-party commercial data recovery software are required. The recovery tools may vary from operating system to operating system and file system to file system.

The applications recover data that may have been resulted by the wrong disk parameters. The recovery applications are also capable of recover lost hard drive partitions. Some of the powerful and advanced data recovery software can recover data from all types of storage devices including hard drive, USB drive, removable media, external hard drives and so forth.

The applications are highly automated and you need to interfere in the recovery process. You need to just select the affected storage media, from which you want to recover data and then start scanning process. After completion of scan, tool show you the list of all recoverable files. You can select desired files and save them to default location or specify other location.

The data recovery applications use superior and highly-developed scanning techniques to carry out in-depth scan of entire storage media and recover all of the lost data from it. The tools are completely easy to use as they have self-explanatory and rich graphical user interface and thus do not demand sound and prior technical skills. They do not alter original data on the hard drive as they have read-only and non-destructive conduct.

Stellar Information Systems Limited is the foremost provider of superior recovery software to handle all types of logical data loss situations. The applications are available for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, UNIX and Novell operating systems. They support all file systems that are usable with these operating systems.

After bringing the failed drive back to life, as a data recovery professional, you know now you need to recover the damaged file system by using file system recovery software; and maybe you know also you need to do a disk imaging in order to work from an accurate, stable hard drive image.

Unfortunately, traditional disk imaging tools and methods are designed for and work on good HDDs only, not the patient HDDs that are unstable or inaccessible because of media defects and instable head, which are common challenges of Stage 2 in practice. Even more, with those traditional imaging tools, the time involved and the ordinary user-level repeated-read access to the media bring a risk of damaging the disk and head, making data lost irretrievable.

But now there’s a better way: The disk probing equipment included in the Data Compass suite bypassing the disk-level problems such as multiple bad sectors, damaged surfaces, malfunctioning head assembly, or corrupted servo info, In the meantime you can use the default software or any other defined software you have been familiar with (R-studio, Winhex, any) to perform file recovery. Through the Data Compass, problem drives will become intact hard drives and ready for file recovery attempts..

Data recovery from physically damaged HDDs is what Data Compass designed for.
