What’s a good hard drive recovery software?

My external hard drive died out of nowhere. I plugged it as usual and it didn’t detect. So I disassembled the external and installed that hard drive into the desktop. When I boot up into windows it detects the hard drive but it shows as an unallocated drive.

Is there any software (free or for purchase) that will allow me to see my data?

Is there anyway I can undo the copy made of my internal hard drive to my externa. My friend was only supposed to back up my internal hard drive but ended up copying it(he used Paragon Back Up Utility Software). And its freaking me out because all the data that was on my external hard drive is lost(exact replica of my main drive) Can the data be restored freely through windows or any type of freeware that won’t have limitations?

I’ve had my laptop since Christmas, and I recently kicked smelly vista into the trash and put windows 7 beta on. [Don't even think about saying that that's my problem, because it is much more stable than vista!!] So anyway, recently my computer wouldn’t boot after left unplugged and had the battery die, and I used an Ubuntu Live CD to try to copy my data out, but It was unable to mount the drive and said something about ntfs inconsistencies, corruption, or hardware failure [please! no! I'd rather data loss!] So, I’ve removed my drive from my laptop and will connect it to an external hard drive assembly to run chkdsk under linux’s reccomendation, and if that doesn’t help, I need some suggestions for data recovery software. Thanks in advance!
